Discover the striking character of this Vintage African Benin leopard sculpture, inspired by the artistic heritage of the historic Kingdom of Benin in West Africa, in present-day Nigeria.
The leopard, known as the “King of the Bush,” is one of the principal symbols of the Oba, or king, in Benin art, expressing the ruler’s ferocious and commanding nature. The Kingdom of Benin, an Edo kingdom in present-day southern Nigeria, established its royal Oba dynasty around the 13th century and continued until it was invaded and annexed during the British Punitive Expedition of 1897. The leopard became a powerful emblem of kingship, appearing throughout royal sculpture, ceremonial objects, regalia, and ancestral art.
Inspired by historic Benin leopard sculptures, this vintage replica is made using the traditional lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), the sophisticated method for which Benin's brass-casting tradition became renowned. Its detailed geometric spotting, expressive features, and powerful stance reflect the distinctive naturalism and symbolism of Benin royal art.
Made in Nigeria and sourced in Morocco, North Africa. This vintage sculpture offers a distinctive interpretation of one of the most recognizable symbols of Benin royal art. A compelling piece for collectors of African art and historically inspired objects, the leopard brings a powerful sense of history and character to a curated collection.
