This Nyamwezi Mwana Hiti figure -meaning “child of wood”- originates from Tanzania and holds deep cultural and symbolic significance. Traditionally gifted to young girls by their maternal uncles during initiation ceremonies, these figures served as companions and educational tools, guiding them in the values of sexuality, womanhood, fertility, and family life.

After the ceremony, the figures were worn around the neck and carefully cared for as symbols of fertility and protection. Passed down as heirlooms, Mwana Hiti figures also represent a powerful connection to ancestral lineage and identity.Beyond their ceremonial use, they were often integrated into daily life—decorating musical instruments, walking sticks, furniture, or grave posts.

This rare piece carries a rich history and cultural depth, making it a meaningful addition to any curated space or collection.
